Dirty Hippie Week: The North Mississippi Allstars

I can't imagine there is an abundance of hippies in Mississippi, and actually, in years past, I wouldn't have rushed to call the blistering bluesmen of NMA hippies. But of late, the unwashed masses have been drawing them in as a few undeniable clues fall into place: 1) stellar lead-guitarist Luther Dickinson has been poached by bonafide hippies The Black Crowes (who we'll discuss later), and as such is the reason you won't see the NMA on the road this summer. 2) The band has put on show-stealing sets at recent hippie Mecca Bonaroo and 3) they've re-worked Champion Jack Dupree's tongue-in-cheek hippie anthem "I'd Love To Be A Hippy" for their latest disc Hernando.

I'd Love To Be A Hippy
(lyrics by Champion Jack Dupree/additional lyrics by Jim Dickinson)

I'd love to be a hippy
But my hair won't grow that long
I'd love to be a hippy
But my hair won't grow that long
Just crazy about the way
All the hippies carry on

He might go up the mountain
Tryin' to find a hiding place
He might go up on the mountain
Tryin' to find a hiding place
No matter where you go
He's got the long beard all in his face

I'd love to be a hippy
High up in the hills
Down in Mississippi
Taking all those hippy pills
I'd love to be a hippy
But my hair won't grow that long
Just crazy about the way
All the hippies carry on

(Crazy. Come on, son. Play it back for me one time. Somethin' ain't right.)

Now, your family will drive you to smoking reefer
Make the young girls sniff cocaine
Now, your family will drive you to smoking reefer
Make the young girls sniff cocaine
Take a little drink of whiskey
Flush the dirt right down the drain

I don't wanna be a teacher
'Cause a teacher stays in school
I don't wanna be a farmer
I wasn't born to work like a mule
I don't wanna be a preacher
'Cause a preacher can't have no fun
I don't wanna be a soldier
So don't shoot me with your gun
But I'd love to be a hippy
But my hair won't grow that long
I'm crazy about the way
All the hippies carry on

Well, well, well, well, well, well, well.

These dudes are awesome. Made me "flash" on my time in Mississippi, in Hattiesburg, Meridian, Jackson, and NMA sounds
just like those places... where "bluegrass meets the blues"

Thank you.
