Hot Leeds band Stateless is about to drop a self-titled full-length here in the States (6/19 to be exact; it's already available overseas), and it's one of those discs you just need to own. It will gel nicely in the part of your collection that houses Zero 7 and Royksopp, but sounds like neither. DJ Shadow (who is involved in some of the production here) says the band is "As close to perfection as I've seen in a long time." Now, I don't know if I necessarily align myself with Mr. Shadow's hyperbole, but the album is a gem nonetheless. Chris James' vocals reside in a moody neighborhood near Chris Martin and Thom Yorke, and the combo of live instruments and turntables is one of those rare experiments that pays off. Particularly tasty is their use of the broken-beat style; a surprising counterpoint in some excellent tunes.
